Library Policies

Registering and Borrowing

The Max R. Traurig Library at Naugatuck Valley Community College is open to Connecticut residents, especially to those from Waterbury and towns in the College’s service region. The library registration process is free, easy and quick (5 minutes). The Library Registration Form can be filled out in the library or submitted online.  First-time users will be asked for a signature and identification when they borrow library materials.

All registered users can check out library materials at the main Circulation Desk, located on the 5th floor (L523) of the Learning Resources Building. There is no charge to borrow library items (books, music CDs, DVDs, videos, magazines and journals, flash drives and more), to use computers at the library (including wireless), and to search electronic databases.

Renewing, Placing Holds, Returning Overdue Items, and Replacements

Renewing Library items

Library users are welcome to renew their borrowed items in person at the Circulation Desk (L523), by phone at 203-575-8024 or online.

How to process the online renewal:

For online renewal, go to the Library Online Catalog.

  • Click “My Account” (near the heading area).
  • At the prompt, enter “Institution ID" (Banner number) and “Last Name,” then “Log In.”

When “Patron Record” appears on the screen, Library borrowers can renew any items that have not yet been renewed and are not currently overdue or on hold for another patron.

Placing a hold on Library items

Registered Library users can place a hold (reserve) on any available item within the Library. Patrons may visit the Circulation Desk for assistance in placing or cancelling holds. When the item is available, we will notify you by phone or e-mail. A “hold” may be placed online, by phone 203-575-8024 or in person at the Circulation Desk (L523).

Returning Overdue Items

The library and its holdings are used by all registered patrons. As a courtesy to fellow users, we expect and appreciate the prompt return of all borrowed materials. Patrons who choose not to return their items to the Library or who neglect to pay for the replacement of lost items will be prevented from borrowing additional items. Patrons with overdue Reserve (including textbooks) or Interlibrary Loan (ILL) items will immediately lose their borrowing privileges until the items are returned. An NVCC student who has not resolved the problem of lost items will be placed on hold in Banner, which will prevent them from registering for classes, requesting a transcript, or graduating from the college. Students who are on Banner hold and return overdue items will be removed from hold as soon as possible, within 24 hours.

It is the Library's policy to ensure that as many students as possible have access to the books they need. Therefore, if you do not bring your textbook(s) back within 4 hours, you may be restricted to use textbooks exclusively IN the Library. Students who repeatedly do not return textbooks on time may lose borrowing privileges for the current semester.

If you have a personal or financial situation that prevents you from returning textbooks within 4 hours, please speak with someone- the Circulation Supervisor, the Library Director, your advisor, the Dean of Students- whoever you feel comfortable talking to. The college has many systems in place to help students be successful, but only if you ask.

Replacement copy policy

The Library will accept new or like new replacement copies of library items that have been lost or damaged by patrons. The Library reserves the right to refuse replacements that are unsuitable for circulation due to condition or markings. Replacement copies should be of the same or newer edition than the item lost. Questions about replacement copies should be directed to Elaine Milnor, Circulation Supervisor, at (203) 575-8024 or Jaime Hammond, Director of Library Services, at (203) 575-8199.
